Senior managers from across Pakistan’s mining industry are expected to participate in the SGS Coal Conference 2015. It is anticipated that representatives from Pakistan’s government will join an array of private and public sector speakers to share experiences, opportunities and expertise.

Muhammad Najib Balagamwala
An MBA from the University of California at Berkeley, and also stands first in the Board of Education’s Inter Commerce in 1971, Mr Najib pioneered the import of many commodities into Pakistan, including thermal coal imports for the cement sector. In addition, he holds the position of attracting clients worldwide for export of cement and is a pioneer in bulk cement exports, through Lucky Cement.
As CEO of Sea Trade Group, Mr Najib is regular speaker at cement and coal and oilseed and mineral conferences worldwide, Mr Najib brought in international suppliers from South Africa, Indonesia, Australia and Russia to Pakistan. Sea Trade commands worldwide respect for Trading, handling and shipping of coal.
Dr Arif Bashir – Director, D.G. Khan Cement Company Limited, Nishat Group
Dr. Arif Bashir holds PhD degree in Chemical Engineering and has over 31 years of experience in the fields of project planning and execution; operation and maintenance of cement plants, power plants, paper plant etc. Currently, he is working as Director (Technical and Operations) of D. G. Khan Cement Company Limited - Nishat Group (biggest business group of Pakistan). He is responsible for a 30 MW coal based power plant, Alternate Fuels, and Waste Heat Recovery projects of DG Khan Cement. He has represented Pakistan on various National and International forums.
Mohammad Younus Dagha – Federal Secretary, Ministry of Water and Power
Appointed Federal Secretary at Pakistan’s Ministry of Water and Power in 2013, Mr Younus Dagha has extensive expertise in the provincial government of Sindh and more recently for the country’s federal government. With an MBA, majoring in Finance, and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Karachi, he has experience and expertise in the fields of finance, investment, mining, energy and media management.
Dr Imran Ahmed Khan – Director General, Geological Survey of Pakistan
Specializing in Sequence Stratigraphy, Fluvial Sedimentology and Carbonates Geology, Dr Khan holds a BSc and MSc from the University of Punjab, a Doctorate from the State University of New York, USA and a Post Doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin, USA. His experience in the field of geology and related studies spans over thirty three years.
Dr Imran has delivered more than three dozen scientific presentations in International Scientific Conferences around the globe, and has published more than 60 research publications in international and national scientific journals.
Shahrukh Khan – Chief Executive Officer, Oracle Coalfields PLC
Mr Khan was educated in the USA and UK with a degree in Business Administration and Economics. He was awarded a BA in Business administration and Economics at Richmond, the American International University in London. Mr Khan has project finance experience in the natural resource and infrastructure related sector, predominantly in the Middle East, South Asia and China. He has specialist expertise in large and complex projects, including project valuation and investment appraisal, feasibility studies and other project finance related services.
Suleman Najib Khan – Moderator
An Electrical (Power) Engineer & Energy Consultant, Mr Khan is CEO of HAQ Consult an associate of AF-Consult Switzerland and recently concluded Feasibility Studies & Financial Structuring of 4x150 MW CFPP near Load Centres in Punjab. In 1984-89 he was part of the consultant's team for the first CCPP 600MW at Guddu TPS and in the 1990s, part of the Sulzer Hydro team on the 1728 MW Tarbela Dam 3rd HPP extension. From 2014 to 2015 he held the post of Chairman of the Water Panel of the Pakistan Business Council. A Distinguished Visiting Faculty (DVF) at NDU, Islamabad he has convened dozens of seminars, workshops and conferences, including “The National Conference on Electric Power Deficit” (2011). Mr Khan is currently a member of the Advisory Committee of the Federal Planning Commission.
Irshad Ali Khokhar – Country Manager, Asian Precious Minerals Limited, UK
Mr. Khokhar has represented Pakistan at various international forums and has more than 35 years versatile experience in the mineral sector to his credit. He has served in senior management positions at the provincial and national level, both in the Government and public corporate sectors, as CEO/Managing Director, Director General and Director on the Management Boards of national mineral public sector companies. He has supervised a number of technical cooperation projects sponsored by foreign donors.
Dr Arshad Mahmood – Secretary Mines & Minerals Government of the Punjab
Dr Arshad Mahmood belongs to Civil Service of Pakistan with 25 years of high profile experience in public, corporate and multi-lateral sectors. He has been serving as Secretary, Mines & Minerals Department since 2013 and has initiated mineral exploration programs, especially for iron ore and copper. He has shaped the integrated mine mouth model for power generation based on indigenous coal resources which offers unique investment opportunities.
Dr Farid A Malik – Principal Consultant, EMR Consult Lahore
With over 30 years of technical and management experience in mining, corrosion, materials, engineering and high-tech industry in U.S.A & Pakistan, Dr Malik has contributed to four U.S patents and several publications, and has professional affiliations in the USA, UK, Italy and Germany. He is expert on the development of indigenous resources including Thar Coal Reserves, and experienced in human resources development, management & transfer of technology, technology based development, commercialisation & application of research, revival of sick industry, and organisational development. In addition to his role as principal consultant for EMR Consult Lahore, Dr Malik is Professor of Operations Management at FCC University, visiting Professor on Project Management & TQM (FAST Institute National University) and a certified Lead Auditor for ISO 9000.
Omar M. Malik – PITCO
Omar Malik has over 17 years of management experience in international development work. He has extensive experience in the consulting, design, and implementation of renewable energy projects, demand side management (DSM), environmental and carbon emission reduction initiatives, and in the strategic energy management of Pakistan’s medium and large scale industries. He holds a Bachelors in Finance from Georgetown University (USA) and an MBA from INSEAD (France).
Khalid Mansoor – Chief Executive, The Hub Power Company Limited
Chief Executive of The Hub Power Company Limited (Hubco) since May 20, 2013, and Chairman of Laraib Energy Limited (a subsidiary of Hubco), Mr Mansoor holds a Degree in Chemical Engineering. With more than 32 years of experience and expertise in the Energy & Petrochemical Sectors he has previously served as CEO of Algeria Oman Fertilizer Company (AOA), President and CEO of Engro Fertilizers Limited, Engro Powergen Qadirpur Limited (EPQL), Engro Powergen Limited (EPL) and Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC). He has also served as a Director on the Boards of Engro Foods (Pvt.) Limited, Engro Vopak Terminal Limited and Chairman of the Board of Engro Powergen Limited in the recent past.
Shah Jahan Mirza – Managing Director, Private Power & Infrastructure Board (PPIB)
Recently appointed Managing Director of PPIB, Mr Mirza has also been PPIB’s Executive Director Finance & Policy since September 2014. Holder of a distinction in MSc Investment Management as well as position holder in MBA (Finance) from the University of Punjab, Lahore, he has also completed Diploma examinations of Institute of Banker in Pakistan, with first position. Mr. Mirza has wide-ranging experience in project evaluation, development and financing. Before joining PPIB in July 2003 he served in various organizations including Private Power Cell of Ministry of Water & Power (present PPIB), General Manager Projects Planning in a large industrial group, Financial Analyst in Project Finance Department of a bank, and as an independent consultant.
Muhammad Zubair Motiwala – President, Pak-Afghan Joint Chamber of Commerce & Industries
Elected President of the PAJCCI in March 2012, Mr Motiwala is a board member of the Private Power & Infrastructure Board (PPIB). He is a prominent industrialist and has played an outstanding role in strengthening the national economy, especially for promoting industrialisation in the country. He has served the business community in various capacities throughout his illustrious career as one of the leading representatives from the industrial sector. Mr Motiwala is Chairman of the Sindh Entrepreneur Development Fund and has been a Director on the board of various public and private organizations, including workers welfare funds.
Dr Shahid Munir – Director, Centre for Coal Technology, University of the Punjab Lahore, Pakistan
With a PhD from Leeds University in the UK, an MSc in chemical engineering and an MBA from the University of Punjab, Lahore, Dr Munir, has extensive experience in the coal sector. Currently holding the role of Director at the University of Punjab’s Center for Coal Technology, he is also a Professor at the University’s Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology.
Dr Munir writes extensively for research publications and regularly participates in conferences, seminars and symposia at national and international level.
Muhamma Khalid Pervaiz – Chief Executive, Enerpool
An old Ravian, an Engineer with 54 years experience in Pakistan’s public and private sector, Mr Pervaiz is a leading Geo-Scientist at home and abroad. An MBA, MSc and Bachelor of Law (LLB), he is heavily involved in the assessment of mineable reserves, and the environment, as well as ensuring regulatory compliance of operations. He brings his expertise to the development of mining curricula for educational institute across Pakistan, and the preparation of legal documents to engage international consultants for a coal fired power plant as well as mining feasibility/PC-I documents for the country’s mineral sector. Recognised for his industry expertise, Mr Pervaiz is a key speaker for various universities seminars, symposiums, workshops, training programs and the author of many papers and books.
Xavier Marcel Prévost – Senior Coal Analyst, XMP Consulting
Mr Prévost obtained an MSc in Engineering Geology from the University Of San Andres in 1968, as well as a Diploma in Mining and Exploration, a Graduate Diploma in Engineering and a MEngineering degree. He has been involved in coal since 1977 and established the Geological Survey’s National Coal Database which he managed from 1979 until 1989. After a brief spell at General Mining, Xavier joined the Minerals Bureau – Department of Minerals and Energy in 1995. In 2007, he was employed as Coal Senior Analyst at Wood Mackenzie, and since 2009 has been consulting privately through his company, XMP Consulting.
In recent years, he has actively promoted South Africa’s coal mining industry as part of government and industry decision-making groups. He lectures at the Universities of Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand as well as to several companies on various aspects of the local coal industry. Mr Prévost belongs to several local and international coal committees and groups involved in coal science and technology.
Dr Lars Schernikau
As a co-founder, main shareholder and former member of the supervisory board in the German-based, publicly listed, international coal trading, logistics and mining companies HMS Bergbau AG and IchorCoal NV Dr Scherniau has founded, worked for, and advised a number of companies in the coal and energy sector in Europe, Asia and Southern Africa. Currently, Dr Schernikau focuses on further developing HMS’ South African and Indonesian operations as well as marketing of Indonesian and South African coal products in Asia, Africa and the Indian subcontinent.
Syed Abbas Ali Shah
A Geo-scientist with experience in both the public and private sector, for national and international organisations, Mr Shah, is an MSc in geology, from the University of Sindh, with specializations in geophysics, hydrogeology, and applied geology, as well as coal analysis and management and geological mapping techniques. From Assistant Director with the Geological Survey of Pakistan, to his current role developing the coal sector in Sindh, he has extensive and in-depth understanding of exploration, evaluation, assessment and management of coal mining and power generation. Mr Shah has written more than 25 research publications published in national and international magazine.
Shamsuddin A. Shaikh
Mr Shaikh has held the positions of Chief Executive Officer of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) since June 2012, Engro Powergen Limited since August 2012 and Thar Power Company since June 2013. Currently, he is heading the Thar Coal Mining and Power Project undertaken by SECMC – a joint venture between Engro Corporation and Government of Sindh, established to exploit the huge coal reserves under the Thar Desert. He has also been involved in many significant projects for the company including the Terminal Project of Engro Vopak Terminal Limited.
Mr Shaikh is a Member of the Board of Directors of various companies including SECMC, Thar Power Company Limited and Engro Powergen Limited.
Brig. (Ret’d) Rashid Siddiqi – Executive Director, Pakistan National Shipping Corporation
Brig. Rashid Siddiqi SI (M) joined Pakistan National Shipping Corporation in 2002 as Executive Director (Administration). As Chairman Provident Fund, he is also responsible for its accounting investment and Asset Management. From 2009 to 2011, he was also appointed Chairman/CEO and Chairman Board of Directors of Pakistan National Shipping Corporation. Prior to joining the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation in 2002, he was a member of the Pakistan Army (1971-2002). During his Army career he was a Member Faculty National Defence College Islamabad, Director Military Intelligence and a Brigade Commander.
Brig. Siddiqi attends seminars and symposiums on security, human resource development, analysis of financial statement, poverty alleviation challenges and Asia pacific security at national and international level.
Sharique Azim Siddiqui – Chief Executive Officer, PIBT
Mr Sharique is the CEO of PIBT. He joined Marine Group in 1997 and was involved in various Group Ventures. He served as Director Project and Chief Operating Officer at PICT and was in-charge of container terminal project planning, coordination and implementation. He led the team for the initial bidding for PIBT terminal and was instrumental in IA negotiations with PQA for the same project. He also heads Marine International Container Terminal (MICT) project, an Inland Container Depot in Lahore with direct Railways connectivity for operating dedicated freight trains between Karachi and Lahore. The Project is spread over 30 acres and is on public-private partnership basis with Pakistan Railways. He did his Master of Arts in Economics from Tufts University, Boston, USA.
